Run With The Huskies
On Wednesday I did the Husky Run. Signs for it had started popping up around campus on Monday, and the timing it was right, so I decided to do it. With lines like "Free T-Shirts for the First 500 People," I expected there to be a lot of people, so I got the registration area an hour before the race, and ended up talking to a few people for about 45 minutes before people started showing up. While overall there were probably 150-200, I was definitely surprised at the perceived promise of lots of people and getting a relatively small turnout. No matter. The basketball team was all out, and it's always neat to actually see just how damn tall Hasheem is.
RUNNERS, START!
First half of the race I didn't do too well. I tried to work off a cramp on my right side, and it took a while, but it finally seemed to go away. Second half was a lot of uphill, finished with a quick .2/.3 mile downhill. I managed to get a time of 22:22, which at the race distance calculates to a 7:01 pace time, which is my fastest pace time in a 5k. I wish I had given a little more effort in the end. This was the high point of the race for me obviously, because as a slow guy it's nice to see continual improvements, especially when I'm too lazy and cheap to get a stopwatch so I can see how fast I run when I train. I'm hoping by the spring to get down to 6:40 or 6:30, which I think is doable.
Disappointing to see all the members of the basketball team cheat as all hell. I ran behind Gavin for a while, and then I didn't, as he cut across a corner to cut about a 1/4 mile off the race. Later on, I saw a bunch of the basketball team jump from the woods to get back on the course, and I still ended up beating them. After the race, I talked with a friend who did it who told me they had all gotten in a car about a half mile into the race. I guess the days of a fast cross court presence at Storrs is over.
Didn't end up working out on Thursday because I was feeling achy all over and had to pound out a paper. We'll see what I do tonight.

HIS RETURN IS GLORIOUS
I've decided that I'll try to keep this place updated, and I'll be keeping my training entries over at dailymile. I won't have a lot to say, but I don't have readers, so I guess that's not a big problem?
Did the Husky Run today, will give a quick (or maybe not so quick) race report tonight or tomorrow.
